What Do You Get?
9 Years of Shadows is a captivating side-scrolling Metroidvania adventure developed by Halberd Studios. Join Europa, a courageous warrior, as she ventures into the mechanical giant Talos to halt the spreading corruption that threatens to engulf the world in darkness. Battle fierce creatures, befriend quirky musicians, and unravel the mystery behind the curse that has drained the land of its vibrant colors.
Many brave souls have attempted to penetrate the depths of Talos, an ancient fortress housing remnants of lost civilizations. Having lost everything she cherished, Europa is driven by unyielding resolve to succeed where others failed. As a noble fighter unbound by the curse, she must navigate the castle's twisted halls, locate the corruption's source, and restore color to the world.
Gameplay Highlights
Europa isn't alone in her quest. She allies with Apino, an adorable floating bear with magical powers that can restore color, heal allies, and provide protective shields against Talos's lurking dangers. Apino can also purify corruption and unleash various projectiles to shatter dark crystals and defeat enemies:
- A powerful upward-punching fist.
- A surface-hugging blast that strikes on impact.
- A boomerang-like cyclone that returns to Apino.
Master the elements to explore dynamically. Collect elemental armors—treasures of ancient civilizations—to switch abilities on the fly, enabling you to swim against waterfalls, burrow through underground tunnels, or glide on warm air currents. Wield the powers of lightning, water, earth, and fire to surprise bosses, execute devastating halberd combos, and exploit weaknesses on your path through the shadows.
Music and Storytelling
Music breathes life into the game. Immerse yourself in a poignant soundtrack by Miguel Hasson, complemented by serene 432Hz compositions from legends like Michiru Yamane (Castlevania) and Norihiko Hibino (Metal Gear Solid). Encounter these composers as helpful NPCs who support Europa's journey.
Melody weaves gameplay and narrative together: gather musical notes to perform a healing lullaby that restores health and revitalizes the world.
